Maruti Suzuki's New CNG Automatic Models: What's Changed in Swift, Dzire and Baleno

The automatic vehicles so far have that one issue. The owners of the automatic vehicles had to pay more at the pump. Maruti Suzuki has now brought the two together in the Swift, Dzire and Baleno. Here is a simple look at Maruti Suzuki’s New CNG Automatic Models: What’s Changed in Swift, Dzire and Baleno. We will cover the engine, mileage, variants and daily driving.

What’s New in the CNG Versions of Swift, Dzire and Baleno?

The primary change that you would observe in the newer CN versions lies in the gearbox. CNG options were available only with the manual gearbox. Now, each of the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Dzire and Baleno comes with the automatic gearbox option. These vehicles are sold under Maruti’s Auto Green Mission.

It may be noted that Maruti is not the first vehicle manufacturer to do it. Tata has offered CNG with an automatic for almost two years. But the Swift, Dzire and Baleno are among the best-selling cars in the country, so this move will reach a lot more buyers.

CNG Meets AMT: How the New Setup Works?

The automatic option on Maruti vehicles is a five-speed AMT. Maruti calls it AGS, or Auto Gear Shift. It is actually a manual gearbox but operates through a computer that handles gear and clutch operations for you. That would make the city traffic and driving easier.

An AMT is not as smooth as a regular automatic. You may feel a small pause between gear changes, especially when you press the accelerator hard. Most city drivers get used to it quickly.

What changes under the hood?

There is no huge change as such. That should be good news, as you will continue to have that familiarity. All three cars use the 1.2-litre Z12E three-cylinder engine with Dual VVT. This is a system that adjusts engine timing for better efficiency and idle start-stop. It switches the engine off at red lights to save fuel.

On petrol, the engine makes about 82 bhp and 112 Nm. On CNG, this drops to roughly 69 bhp and 102 Nm, which is normal for CNG cars. Each car carries a 37-litre petrol tank and a 55-litre (water capacity) CNG tank, so you can switch to petrol if you cannot find a CNG pump.

Swift, Dzire and Baleno: Comparing the New CNG Automatics

The table below should give you a better and clearer idea of how these three vehicles work.

35.34 km/kg

36.47 km/kg

34.47 km/kg

All the three vehicles come with the same engine and gearbox. That would mean it is very easy to decide what you want to have in your car. Swift offers you a sporty look. It is also easier to park. The Dzire offers the best mileage and better boot space among the three. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno comes with better cabin space and a premium feel.

Mileage and Performance: What Can Buyers Expect?

The automatic versions of the three cars offer better efficiency than their manual CNG options. The Dzire improves from 33.73 km/kg to 36.47 km/kg, and the Baleno from 33.61 km/kg to 34.47 km/kg. The Swift gains about 2.49 km/kg over its manual version.

Remember that these are lab results. The real-world traffic may depend on the traffic conditions, driving style, and tyre pressure. These cars are built for calm city driving and easy highway cruising. Overtaking on CNG needs a little planning.

New Variants and Features to Know About

It may be noted that the automatic CNG version is available only on select trims.

Here are a few details of the new variants and features that they offer.

  • Swift: VXi at ₹7.92 lakh, VXi (O) at ₹8.18 lakh and ZXi at ₹8.86 lakh.
  • Dzire: VXi at ₹8.53 lakh and ZXi at ₹9.54 lakh.
  • Baleno: Delta at ₹8.32 lakh and Zeta at ₹9.32 lakh.

The higher trims get the better features. The Swift ZXi, for example, gets 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, wireless phone charging, automatic climate control with rear vents and rear USB-C ports.

Boot space may be a concern. The CNG takes a lot of space, and that may compromise your available boot space. If you are into carrying a lot of the luggage, it is advisable to check the vehicle personally before buying.

How the CNG Automatic Models Suit Everyday City Driving?

The CNG automatic versions are best suited for people who drive in city traffic every day. The automatic will help you keep your leg comfortable, and CN lets you save money.

These are the best vehicles and are better for the beginners who are not comfortable with manual driving. They can also be a right choice for those looking to save costs. The primary consideration should be to check if you have CNG stations on your route. You may also need to check if you are comfortable with the boot space.
